Abstract
If thou art one to whom petition is made, be calm as thou listenest to the petitioner's speech. Do not rebuff him before he has swept out his body or before he has said that for which he came. A petitioner likes attention to his words better than the fulfilling of that for which he came… It is not [necessary] that everything about which he has petitioned should come to pass, [but] a good hearing is a soothing of the heart. Vizier Ptah‐Hotep, ca. 2450 B.C.E. (Before the Common Era, as cited in Ceresko, 1992, p. 275).
